But did you know most signings are booked from 18 - 12 months ahead of time?
A friend of mine is pulling together a signing for March 2019 in Brisbane and she's been pulling the threads together for a while. There's a whole heap more involved than just saying "i'll do it and booking somewhere." See, there's the pricing for the authors to arrange (based on the cost of the venue, the number of attending authors and are they going to be there for 2 days or one, and if they'll have an assistant.)
Tables need to be ordered, and the floor plan put together, sponsors to be sought out, Facebook pages to set up and admin, liability insurance... The list is pretty damned huge!
Most authors also have to submit an EOI - Expression of Interest and the organisers will choose the attending authors based on how well their genre fits within the theme, how many books and what they will commit to.
Bank accounts need to be set up to handle the funds, ticket companies to be lined up and so much more.
So, when you look at the next event near you, bear in mind, there is a lot of work and effort (and I've only touched on the tip of it all) for the organisers and the authors and most of us have committed ourselves to these events far in advance.
