Now, the astrologers have named it a Super Blue Blood Moon. I'm going out on a limb and calling it a purple moon. But what exactly is it? Well, look below for the more scientific clarification of what each is.
What is a Blue Moon?
a second full moon in a calendar month.
"tomorrow's full moon is a blue moon"
What is a Blood Moon?
Earth's moon during a total lunar eclipse, that is, when a full moon is in exact alignment with the Earth and the sun, with Earth in between the two. Light refracted off of Earth's atmosphere appears on the moon in a dark-red hue, hence the name "blood moon."
What is a Super Moon?
A full moon or new moon, when the Earth-Moon distance is in the lowest tenth of its range
The interesting thing is the last time there was a celestial convergence like this was 1866 so the likelihood of it happening again in our lifetimes is pretty low. I'd suggest we should get outside and view this thing then!
| So what will happen? Will it rain Cats and Dogs? Will Zuul rise up from the dead, some long forgotten God-like entity to wrest control of humanity? Huh... What? |
Here in Australia, we're in the box seat, because in Queensland somewhere between about 10.30 pm and 1 am on the 1st will be perfect lunar watching time. In our backyard, we'll have 2 telescopes on hand, ready to view. And we might even manage to get some photos! I hope so.
Of course, living in a rural location, we've got clear skies and awesome views.
Now, if you're looking for more details on the celestial events, I would suggest visiting a site like www.space.com or even ABC Online. Lastly, you might find more details specific to your location here.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Purple Moon Event. Comment on my Facebook Profile and make sure you upload photos of you moon watching!
