Bewares: Lots of Violence and Supernatural Themes
Carissa is the daughter of a God living in the mortal realm making her living as a police office in America.
That is until things go wrong at a warehouse and her partner is injured. In the skirmish, she comes face to face with Xen, an immortal vampire with a very large sword.
Now the demons are after her and her attraction to Xen is messing with her mind.
I was attracted to this title for 2 points. I have to be upfront with the most amazing drawcard when it comes to this book, it's The Cover. It's awesome with the exquisite detail and attention. I have also waited for this book for a long long time. (Like 5 years??)
Fave Character: Actually the one that stood out for me was Gumbo. Tithon is a character introduced about half way through the story and is integral to helping Carissa.
Worst Character: Hal. There was no competition for this character. He's so bad that he's awful! Actually I think he's a really well rounded character. We know his backstory and how he connects to Carissa and his awfulness reaches its absolute point at the end of the story.
Best or Worst Scene in the book: (in terms of enjoyment) There are actually 2 for me, but one of these gives a whole chunk of the story away, so I'll tell you the other. For me, its the scene in the warehouse. I really love the way when our hero and heroine meet. The fight scene feels quite authentic to me and their first meeting isn't perfection.
Summation: While Carissa has to grow through the story (which she does) I do get the feeling that there is room for her to become a much stronger character in her own right (and we really see a glimpse of that at the end of the story)
There are the odd little niggles, as in any book. It's a first story, a first book and the beginning of an intriguing over-arching story arc and I can't wait to see what comes next. Take a chance on this new author because I know her story will only get bigger and bolder.
