
Vasya ushered the others up the side of the ravine, looking for reception then dialed. He had only used one of these devices a few times in the past and kept watching for the bars everyone said were so important.
People stopped to look at the vehicle lying partway down, held in place by some spindly bushes. He ignored them. She’d given him instructions and he’d follow them through.
“Phil here. What’s up, Christina?”
“This is not Christina. There has been an accident and she told me to ring you.”
“Who is this?” the voice demanded, and he winced a little as the ache in his head bloomed.
“I am... I am a friend.” Vasya didn’t know why, but he wasn’t yet prepared to give voice to the tangled relationship he shared with his wife. “She is hurt. Badly I think.”
